NEW: Maya Kowalski listens to one of the last phone calls between her 8-year-old self and her mother Beata, before she hung herself in their garage. The Kowalski family behind documentary ‘take care of maya’ are suing John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for $220 million, claiming they pushed Maya’s mother to take her life amid a legal battle for Maya’s custody. At 10-years-old, Maya Kowalski was detained under state custody at John Hopkins, after they accused her parents of faking the symptoms of her regional pain syndrome, alleging the mother had Munchausen syndrome by Proxy. She was kept on a ward with no access to her family, whilst staff allegedly withheld her pain medication to challenge the claims she was actually sick. The distress allegedly caused her mother Beata, to take her own life.
